MIT Portugal at IST
Overview
The MIT-Portugal Program is a long-term collaboration initiative between the Portuguese Government, through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) focusing on basic research and education.
The MIT-Portugal Program has two main themes: Engineering Systems and Management Sciences. In the domain of Engineering Systems, the focus areas are Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing, Transportation Systems, Energy Systems and Bio-Engineering Systems.
The MIT-Portugal Program involves 10 schools of higher education and 7 different universities, together with a large number of research centers and Associated Laboratories, as well as State Laboratories. In addition to academic and research institutes, the program includes a number of industrial affiliates.
The involvement of IST in the MIT-Portugal Program is focused on doctoral programs and research projects. These doctoral programs are organized with the collaboration of MIT and the degrees awarded by IST in association with other Portuguese Partner Universities. Students will conduct part of their research at MIT and the rest of the time at the Portuguese Universities.
MIT-Portugal Activities at IST
Within the MIT-Portugal Program, IST is involved in different research areas that compromises master, doctoral and advanced training programs.
Doctoral Programs
The doctoral programs are organized in collaboration with MIT. The doctoral degree is awarded by IST, as part of the Technical University of Lisbon, in association with other Portuguese Partner Universities. After the successful completion of the curricular component during the first year of the program, students are awarded an Advanced Study Diploma.
The following Doctoral Programs will be offered in the academic year 2010-2011:
