Doctoral Programmes
IST offers a diversity of PhD programmes, covering a large spectrum of scientific areas, from the traditional to the emergent ones. Some of the programmes are offered in association with national and foreign universities, in some cases granting a dual or double degree. IST PhD students actively participate in national and international research projects, are motivated to patent their innovative research results and stimulated to take an entrepreneurship attitude.

| Architecture | This PhD program aims at filling a gap at the level of post-graduate training in the field of Architecture and Urbanism and implementing the project-oriented PhD concept. Of particular interest and specific to this programme offered by IST is the dialogue between the classic domains of Architecture and the Engineering disciplines. Architecture is one of the Focus Areas of the Joint Doctoral Initiative established between IST and EPFL. |
| Bioengineering | The main objective of this PhD programme is to ensure that a PhD holder in this field is provided with systematic understanding and skills in an area lying in the intersection of Live Sciences and Engineering, with high prospects for targeting a scientific and technological revolution in the XXI century. | Biomedical Engineering | This PhD programme is a multidisciplinary endeavor combining the latest developments in life sciences and the revolutionary advances in technological disciplines, resulting from the collaboration between IST and the Medical School of the University of Lisbon, highly innovative in Europe and internationally. Biomedical Engineering is one of the Focus Areas of the Joint Doctoral Initiative established between IST and EPFL. |
| Biotechnology | The students enrolled in this PhD program obtain advanced background in an area with exceptional scientific advances since the end of the 20th century, such as Protein Engineering, Stem Cells Biology, Systems Biology, Synthetic Biology, Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics, and Nanobiotechnology. |

| Civil Engineering | The objectives of this PhD programme are the development of knowledge in this engineering area or in associate scientific areas, providing a better understanding of related theoretical and applied problems. |
| Climate Changes and Sustainable Development Policy | The PhD Program on Climate Changes and Sustainable Development Policy, coordinated by University of Lisboa, in association with the Technical University of Lisboa and the New University of Lisboa, has the support of the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom, and is offered in an interdisciplinary area centered on the domains of the Environment and the Social Sciences, having strong links with areas such as Economy, Law, Policy and Ethics. |

| Engineering and Public Policy | The Engineering and Public Policy PhD programme is an interdisciplinary endeavor focused on the technology management and policy issues that arise when designing, developing, implementing and managing networked infrastructures, with specializations in information and communication technologies policy and in energy policy. |
| Environment Engineering | This is a PhD program that merges the traditional engineering knowledge with social economics, land use management and environmental technologies, so as to provide the Environmental Engineer a solid and focused background to find solutions for the environmental problems and, at the same time, keep up with nature and society's rapid evolution. | Leaders for the Technical Industries | The PhD programme in Leaders for for the Technical Industries links high quality education to an innovative curriculum, to promote a new entrepreneurial attitude towards knowledge-based manufacturing and competitive product development. | Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering | The topics covered by the PhD Programme in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering involve planning, project, construction, exploration and maintenance of the systems, vehicles and structures that are designed to explore marine resources. |
| Materials Engineering | This PhD programme aims at enabling to students the access to a highly specialized background in Material Engineering, focused on scientific research, technological development and innovation. |
| Mathematics | The Doctoral Program in Mathematics offers both in depth and in breadth preparation in Mathematics. The program includes basic and advanced courses in analysis, algebra, logic, geometry, topology, differential equations, dynamical systems, mathematical-physics, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, and the theory of computation. Students interested in Applied Mathematics can study applications in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Finance, Information Systems and Engineering. Students can also choose to pursue their PhD degree in one of the international IST collaborations in the area of Mathematics: the CMU-Portugal, UT Austin-Portugal and IST-EPFL initiatives. |

| Technologial Physics Engineering | The structure of this PhD programme is designed to provide knowledge beyond the state of the art in the different scientific areas in Physics Engineering.
